#Rainbarrelselfie Contest Returns

We're pleased to announce our second annual #rainbarrelselfie contest!

Capturing rain and using it on your property is a great way to conserve water; keep contaminants out of our rivers and streams; and water your plants, lawn, trees and shrubs. We want to get #yyc excited about rain barrel season because we know that Calgarians can save millions of litres of water every year!

To encourage more Calgarians than ever before to harvest rain water, we're giving away $25 gift cards (courtesy of Blue Grass) each week between May 9 - July 4. What do you have to do to win one? It's super simple: take a selfie with your installed rain barrel and tweet @greencalgary with the hashtag #rainbarrelselfie.  Or post your rain barrel selfie to Facebook and tag Green Calgary!

It doesn't have to be one of our rain barrels, it just has to be installed and in #yyc! We'll award 1 gift card each week during the contest with winners announced on Mondays.

We can’t wait to see your #rainbarrelselfies, and celebrate all the water being saved this year!

It's a Bug's Life

Over the past week, we've run two Native Insect Identification Walks in Prince's Island Park. Thanks to our incredible experts, Nick Johnson of Eat My Shrubs Holistic Landscaping and Haydee Peralta, Ecologist and Insect Expert, we were able to take a few dozen brave souls on the journey into the fascinating world of bugs! Nick provided tips and tricks for pesticide free insect management as well as gardening info. Haydee led the insect identification portion. Everyone had fun learning about our buzzing buddies, even if they were unsure at first. There was a couple that were a little scared of bees but by the end of the walk they were confident enough to gently catch and release wasps! That's a big leap! The Bugs in Your Backyard program has been something Green Calgary has been interested in doing for a while now, and we're very pleased to finally get the chance. A New Kind of Summer Camp from Green Calgary!

Green Calgary brings summer camps to your own backyard this summer! Green Calgary has developed a new summer program to help bridge the gap between a summer camp and online learning in the new Backyard Science Summer Program! The program has activities, guides, videos, and live sessions to give you a fun-filled week of having your very own summer camp. With hours of content each day and hands-on support from our experienced educators, your child will learn about the science of nature, while having fun outdoors! Green Calgary offers four camps in July and August. Each camp is geared towards a certain grade, though the content for each camp is different, so your child could attend multiple camps. The first camp is the Adventurer Camp for Grades 5-6 and is focused on Bees and Bugs. It runs from July 6 to 10. Find out more and register here...
