Enjoy a Green Stampede in 2018!
The Calgary Stampede is here again! It’s one of the most quintessential Calgarian experiences, and you can certainly reduce your own impact no matter what you’re doing for Stampede:
At the parade! It's going to be a really hot day for the parade this year, but whether it’s the Stampede Parade or one of the community parades that happen at this time of year, it’s a good idea to make sure you have sunscreen, and if you’re getting some new sunscreen, take a look at natural sunscreens. It’s just as effective, and it’s way better for the environment. You can find a few brands at Community Natural Foods.
At pancake breakfasts! If you’re at a pancake breakfast, there are a few things you can do to keep things green. At the top of the list, is making sure that you put your waste in the right place, separating compost, recycling, and landfill garbage. You can also bring your own reusable utensils just in case they only have plastic ones and not compostable.
In your backyard! If you’re holding a Stampede party or barbecue, you can reduce your party’s waste by making sure that you’re using reusable or compostable dinnerware. You can often get inexpensive plates and utensils from thrift stores to use, or if you don’t want the fuss of cleaning up compostable dinnerware, such as that sold at our EcoStore, can go in the green bin or your backyard composter (make sure you ask which).
On the grounds! Getting to the grounds, first of all, is easy with Calgary Transit, which will also save cars on the road (and avoid parking frustrations). Make sure you bring your reusable water bottle with you, to take advantage of the water refill stations, and to keep hydrated. Once you’re on the grounds, take care with your food selections. If you can, bring some food with you, otherwise look for vendors who are offering green options – little to no packaging, no straws, compostable dinnerware, and so on.
These are just a few ideas, but there’s lots you can do. Share your other ideas with us through social media on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Have a happy Stampede, Calgary! Yahoo!
