Support your Community! Shop a Market This Weekend!

Summer in Calgary has officially kicked off! This means that market season is now upon us. There are tons of markets scheduled for the rest of summer and even multiple ones happening this upcoming weekend. As mentioned in one of our previous blog posts, shopping local is a great and easy way to be green. At the markets, you will find a variety of goodies ranging from vintage clothes, to farm fresh produce, and maybe even some beeswax wraps to reduce your plastic wrap consumption.

Shopping local has plenty of benefits including helping the economy. Did you know that spending $100 locally ensures that $68 stays in the community? This article explains this notion in more depth and also talks about the importance of supporting your neighbors and becoming an active member of your community. These local businesses also tend to have a smaller carbon footprint than their big brand counterparts, which is another reason to spend your money locally.

There are also advantages to buying locally grown farm fresh goodies. These include the fact that vegetables and fruits you are buying are usually ripe and preservative free, which results in a fresher, more nutritious crop. Buying fresh also helps encourage us to make healthier, more balanced meals.

Below are some of next weekend’s markets!

- Millerville Farmer’s Market, every Saturday from 9 am – 2:00pm, June 29
- Farmers and Makers Market at cSPACE, every Saturday from 10am – 1:00pm
- Calgary Night Market (Food Truck Nights), June 28 - 29 from 5:00pm – 11:00pm
- Vivo Night Market North, June 29 from 4:00pm -9:00pm

These are only a few of what’s to come this summer! Keep an eye out for any more, we look forward to seeing you there! Find us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram for more!
